Kenneth B. Petersen CFP®, EA, MBA, AIFA®
Ken Petersen is President and CEO of Monterey Private Wealth. He has 30 years of experience in financial services. Petersen specializes in investment portfolio management and advanced planning for professionals, retirees, and foundations.
He holds an MBA with an emphasis in Finance from Old Dominion University in Virginia, an MS degree in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He is a graduate of the College of Financial Planning and a past participant in the Level II Endowment Institute at the Yale School of Management. Petersen is board-certified as a Financial Planner by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards and accredited as an Investment Fiduciary Advisor by the Center for Fiduciary Studies (fi360).
Before entering investment management, Petersen co-founded a tax and financial planning software company in 1981, where he wrote and published financial software for the IBM PC. He sold his half of the company to a private equity firm in 1988 and has dedicated himself to investment management ever since.
Petersen wrote the Financial Planning column for the Monterey County Herald from 1995 until February 2017. He served on the Board of Directors of the Big Sur International Marathon during its first eight years and currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Community Foundation for Monterey County and as Trustee, Secretary, Treasurer, and Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation in Monterey. He is a past-president of the Pacific Grove Rotary Club and a past-commander and a current volunteer pilot for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Aero Squadron.
In a prior life he was a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot. Petersen currently flies his Cessna 182 airplane to various destinations in the western United States. He enjoys hiking, riding bikes with his family around the Monterey Peninsula, and reading.
